KCS Teacher Breaks Record as Two-Time Winner of Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month Award

Congratulations to Fran Patterson, the Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month for February 2017!

Fran Patterson is an outstanding kindergarten teacher at Fred L. Wilson Elementary School. She received a record-setting THIRTEEN nominations from families and students that could not say enough good things about how wonderful she is. Fran is our first two-time winner of the Hilbish Award. She first received the honor back in 2011. We normally don’t select repeat winners, but we could not ignore so many heart-felt nominations.

Here is just a sampling:
“There are no words to describe how appreciative we are of Mrs. Patterson. I have never come across an individual as genuine and caring as she is. She has helped my children to read and achieve their goals.”
“Before starting at Fred L. Wilson, my son was diagnosed with Select Mutism, had severe anxiety, and would not speak at school. It took Mrs. Patterson maybe a month and my son was comfortable enough to speak with her and most other teachers.”
“Mrs. Patterson goes over and beyond her duties as a teacher and genuinely cares for her students. We could not ask for a better teacher!” Even one of her students sent in a nomination, “My teacher is the best. She helps me with my reading.”
Another mom ended her nomination by summing up the feelings of her entire family when it comes to Mrs. Patterson: “We love her dearly."

Fran was presented with a plaque and a gift of $300 from Hilbish Ford during the February 2017 Kannapolis Board of Education meeting.  We are so proud of Fran and delighted that she is our first two-time winner of the Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month Award.  Congratulations!

Colleen Barrese Shines as our KCS Teacher of the Month

Colleen Barrese is a dedicated and compassionate third grade teacher at Jackson Park Elementary School. She believes that her students should have a stable, loving, and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature. It is important to Colleen that each of her students has a voice and is heard. Colleen not only plans individual learning that best meets the needs of each student in her class, but she also recognizes and celebrates the growth of every student. One parent said, “She knows how to motivate them, what makes them tick, and how to get them to fall in love with learning.”

Colleen integrates fun and practical lessons in her classroom to get her students excited about learning.  For example, she turns a simple cup lid into a force and motion experiment or designs a garden while studying area and perimeter and then actually has the garden built. You can often walk by her classroom windows and see math problems written in dry erase marker. These are just a few examples of why Colleen’s students love being in her class and love going to school.

We are excited recognize Colleen as an exceptional teacher and proud to honor her as our Teacher of the Month. Congratulations Colleen!

Kannapolis City Schools Presents Danielle Ellington with the Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month Award

Danielle Ellington is an outstanding 5th grade teacher at Kannapolis Intermediate School. Her interactive and thoughtful teaching methods keep her students excited about school and eager to learn.

Danielle is able to take the material she is teaching in class and turn it into memorable experiences for her students. For example, she made Pilgrim stew in her classroom to teach the students about the first Thanksgiving. She also made butter and candles as part of Colonial Day in her classroom. One parent praised Danielle for this type of attentive and time consuming planning for her classes and said her daughters will always remember these lessons. The parent also said she appreciates that Danielle communicates not only her daughter’s shortcomings, but also her accomplishments. Danielle is very considerate in pointing out the good in each of her students and they recognize how much she cares about them as a result. She is truly an asset to Kannapolis Intermediate School.

We are extremely proud that Danielle is part of our Kannapolis City Schools’ family, and we are and delighted to present her with the Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month Award. Congratulations!

Cory Stirewalt Named Kannapolis City Schools' Outstanding Teacher of the Month

Kannapolis City Schools recognized Cory Stirewalt for his excellence in the classroom by presenting him with the Hilbish Ford Outstanding Teacher of the Month Award for March 2016.  Cory is an exceptional AP and Honors Social Studies teacher at A.L. Brown High School. Although his classes are rigorous and challenging, he is a well-loved teacher whose students excel academically and leave the classroom prepared for college and the future.

When asked why they are nominating Cory for the Hilbish Ford Outstanding Teacher of the Month Award, one parent praised him for his excellent teaching instruction, as well as how he approaches his job as a teacher and leads his students by example. The parent said he recently asked his child a couple political questions and was pleased to hear very thoughtful and intelligent responses, rather than receiving the usual one word answers. This was a result of time spent in Cory’s class last semester. Parents also commended Cory for his presentation skills during open house and the time he took at the beginning of the semester to provide information about what to expect in the class and to explain his educational philosophy.

We are extremely proud that Cory is part of our Kannapolis City Schools’ family, and we are and delighted to present him with the Hilbish Ford Teacher of the Month Award for March 2016. Congratulations!
